Renting in St. Albert: The Commute to Edmonton and What It Means for Families

SEPTEMBER 25, 2026

Quick answer: Riverside Villas, GSK's St. Albert community, is on Redspur Drive. Downtown Edmonton is a drive down St. Albert Trail, or a St. Albert Transit bus. The City of Edmonton says those regional routes use numbers in the 200s, and Arc works on both St. Albert Transit and Edmonton Transit. There is no honest single minute-count. Drive it, and ride it, at the time you would actually leave.

The St. Albert Commute to Downtown Edmonton

What route are you actually driving?

St. Albert sits on Edmonton's northwest edge. The direct road is St. Albert Trail. Anthony Henday Drive is the ring road if your job is in the west or the north rather than downtown. Those are two different commutes. A trail drive that is easy at 10:00 can be a different trip at 7:45, and winter changes it again.

Before you sign at Riverside Villas, leave Redspur Drive at your real start time on a weekday. Do it once toward downtown and once toward the Henday if that is the job. A published average from someone else's Tuesday is not your commute.

Can you do this commute on the bus?

Yes, if the timetable matches your shift. St. Albert runs its own transit system into Edmonton. Edmonton Transit says regional routes from St. Albert use route numbers in the 200s, and that Arc is the fare card across Edmonton, St. Albert, Strathcona County, Beaumont, Fort Saskatchewan and Spruce Grove. A fare cap in one system is not automatically a fare cap in every system. Read the current Arc rules before you assume a monthly pass covers both.

The bus is a real option. It is not a promise that a bus stops at the end of Redspur Drive at the minute you need. Check the stop for that address on the current map.

Who is this commute for?

People who want a quieter street, schools in St. Albert, and townhome space at Riverside Villas, and who can live with the trail or the bus. It is a poor fit if you need to be at a downtown desk five days a week and you have not timed the trip. The pitch for St. Albert is comfort, not a short walk to Jasper Avenue.

What else should you confirm at Riverside Villas?

The current rent on the listing, which utilities are included, parking, and the pet rule for that townhome. The security deposit is capped at one month's rent under Alberta law. Maintenance is GSK's in-house team, with a 24-hour response. Month-to-month and fixed terms are both offered.

St. Albert vs Edmonton for Families

For a family, St. Albert means Riverside Villas, a townhome community on Redspur Drive, with schools in the city and the Sturgeon River trails. Edmonton means a shorter commute and more walkable neighbourhoods, including Old Strathcona, Rossdale and Chappelle. GSK rents in both. Pick the one whose weekday you have actually driven.

What does a family give up by choosing St. Albert?

A short hop to downtown, to the University of Alberta, or to Whyte Avenue. St. Albert is a separate city on the northwest edge. The road in is St. Albert Trail, and the bus is St. Albert Transit. Families who are in Edmonton five days a week feel that. Families who work in St. Albert, or in northwest Edmonton, often do not.

The gain is the reason people move there on purpose: a quieter street, townhome layouts instead of a stacked apartment, and schools in the community. It is a comfort choice. It is not a nightlife choice.

What does Edmonton offer a family instead?

More than one kind of neighbourhood. Old Strathcona puts you near Whyte Avenue and campus. Rossdale is the walkable, lower-priced option beside downtown and the river valley. Chappelle, in the southwest, is newer construction with Chappelle Garden Apartments and Chappelle Gardens Villas on Chappelle Boulevard. North Edmonton is Nova Villa on 152 Avenue. West Edmonton is Guardian Apartments and Guardian Villas on Guardian Road in Glastonbury.

Those are different family lives. A townhome in Chappelle is not a walk-up in Old Strathcona. Compare the listing in front of you with Riverside Villas on space, utilities included, and the commute you timed, not on a city average.

What should the comparison include besides rent?

Utilities. A suite that includes heat, water and internet costs less in January than a lower rent that bills those separately. The deposit, which Alberta caps at one month's rent. Pets, which are set per building. And maintenance: GSK's team is in-house, with a 24-hour response, in both cities.

Do not use a median-income statistic as a reason to sign. A higher citywide income does not tell you whether this townhome fits your budget.

FAQ

Where is Riverside Villas?

On Redspur Drive in St. Albert. The property page has the full address and the current rent.

Is there an LRT from St. Albert to downtown Edmonton?

Not from St. Albert itself. The commute is St. Albert Trail by car, or a St. Albert Transit bus connecting into Edmonton.

Does one transit pass cover St. Albert and Edmonton?

Arc is the regional card, and it is accepted on both systems. Check which fare product you need. A pass that caps out on Edmonton buses does not automatically describe every regional trip.

Is St. Albert better for kids?

It is the quieter townhome option, with schools in the community. Edmonton has more neighbourhood types, including newer southwest townhomes in Chappelle. Visit the school designated for the exact address. Boundaries are set by the school board.

Is the commute the deciding factor?

For most families, yes. Time it from Redspur Drive, and from the Edmonton building you are also considering, at the hour you would leave.

Where are the current rents?

On each property page. The St. Albert and Edmonton rental pages list what is available now.

How do I book a viewing?

From the Riverside Villas property page, or by calling the community leader listed there.
